Spring cleaning tips to protect your investment!

Spring cleaning is more than just cleaning out your closets. As homeowners, it’s important to also maintain the exterior elements of your home to protect your investment and proactively avoid problems.

Our customer care team has compiled a spring cleaning checklist to help save you time, money and a headache when something avoidable goes wrong. In addition to annual exterior and interior maintenance tips, we’ve also included our favorite spring cleaning hacks to revive your home this season.

Exterior Maintenance

Now that the snow has melted you can begin checking off your exterior maintenance list. The good news: you don’t have to be a certified handyman to tackle these tasks! Taking a few hours this spring to comb through exterior elements of your home can proactively identify any issues that can be addressed prior to a catastrophe.

Here are nine exterior tasks to check off your list this spring:

  1. Check your roof to ensure it’s in good order. If any shingles are damaged or missing, have them repaired before the problem escalates. Additionally, inspect if the roof flashing requires any sealant and ensure that all vents on the roof are free of obstructions.
  2. Windows should be cleaned along with their screens and hardware. Screens are easily replaced with a kit from your local hardware store.
  3. Test all exterior lights and plugins. Ensuring your property is well lit can help deter theft and vandalism this summer.
  4. Visually examine your foundation by performing a walk around your property. Check for any cracks, leaks or signs of moisture from inside your home and repair them immediately.

4. Visually examine your foundation by performing a walk around your property. Check for any cracks, leaks or signs of moisture from inside your home and repair them immediately.

5. Check your eavestroughs and downspouts for loose joints and secure attachment to your house. Clear any obstructions and ensure water flows away from your f

6. Look for any damage to your fence, such as broken boards, to ensure your property is secure. This is especially important if you have pets that like to escape!

7. Clear all drainage ditches and culverts of debris.

8. Apply the first round of fertilizer to your lawn and young trees. If any branches are overhanging your home or power lines, have them tended to as soon as possible.

9. Check all water and drain fittings monthly to avoid an unnecessary flood.

Interior Maintenance

Yes, there’s maintenance to complete inside as well! You’ve probably looked at some of these and thought “oh, I’ll get around to that!” But the reality is, if these items aren’t regularly checked you could be putting your family and property at risk.

Don’t wait to check these six items off your list:

  1. After consulting your Hot Water Tank Owner Manual, carefully test the temperature and pressure relief valve to ensure it is not stuck. Caution – this test may release hot water that can cause burns.
  2. Check, clean or replace furnace filters every month. Heat recovery ventilator filters should also be checked every two months.
  3. Clean and service your fireplace or wood stove and chimney as required. Turn off your gas fireplace pilot lights when possible.
  4. Shut down and clean the furnace humidifier. Close the furnace humidifier damper on units with central air conditioning.
  5. Check smoke, carbon monoxide and security alarms and replace batteries.
  6. Replace batteries on your keyless door entry.

Don’t forget the cleaning part of “Spring Cleaning!”

One of the best pieces of advice we can give you for spring cleaning is to tackle your house one room at a time. Start with the main areas of your home and remove anything that doesn’t serve a purpose and only collects dust.

When it comes to the major visual elements of your home, here are five things that should be on your checklist this spring:

  1. Clean the inside and outside of your windows. Now that your blinds will be open and the sun will shine through, let’s make sure the windows are clean and clear!
  2. Wash your walls and cabinets. While these aren’t part of your weekly chore list, it’s important to give them a good wipe down every spring!
  3. Take apart and clean your appliances. Now is the perfect time to take your burners off the stove and give them a deep clean, in addition to pulling your fridge out and making it sparkle again.

4. Dust your light fixtures and ceiling fans. This is often an overlooked area that can help contribute to the overall air quality in your home.

5. Pressure wash your home’s exterior. Over the winter, there’s been lots of build-up with snow and ice, so this is a great time to spray your exterior down.
