Alberta Energy Code Changes

The Alberta government has adopted the National Energy Code for Buildings and is implementing new energy efficiency requirements on all new homes built in the province, effective November 1, 2016. Homes built prior to November 1 are exempt from the legislation.

What does this mean for you?

If you are building a new custom order home through us, effective August 18th, it will be built to The Alberta Energy Code 9.36. The province has been divided into four climatic zones – most of our customers fall into Zone 7A. Customers within Zone 7B and 8 will require further additional options to meet the new building codes. Talk to your Housing Consultants for more details.

The new code change is a forced option upgrade, ranging in price, starting from about $2,000 (Zone 7A).

The government suggests that the increased construction costs will be offset by savings on your heating costs. It affects four components of a building (the building envelope, lighting, HVAC and service water heating) and is ultimately aimed at improving energy efficiencies of buildings.
