Hiring a Contractor

While there are a couple of modular home companies that will offer full turn-key packages, the decision to purchase a modular home typically means that the home buyer will be completing at least a portion of the work on their own.

And for this we say – beware of fly by night contractors! It pays to do your homework. Mike Holmes, a professional contractor and popular TV personality, says that one of the biggest mistakes people make when hiring contractors is trying to rush things. “The work can’t start tomorrow and they shouldn’t hire the first person that shows up at their door”, says Mike.

Do your research | Hire a professional

  • Take the time to check your contractor’s references and trade associations
  • Check with the Better Business Bureau
  • Check to make sure they have insurance and are licensed to perform the work

Get multiple quotes

  • 3 is a good number & consider all of them. The least expensive is often not the best.
  • Make sure the quotes are in writing – if you are financing the project, the bank will need a copy of the quote anyway.

Get it in writing

  • Always get the scope of the work laid out into a contract
  • While most tradespeople are skilled professionals, there are scam artists in every industry – take the time to document the scope of the work so expectations are clear from the beginning
  • Use this checklist to ensure you don’t miss any steps
